Final OpenNESS Annual Meeting in Smolenice, Slovakia

Kinross Estate Company (KEC) is a private, family-owned company whose principal assets include Loch Leven, together with land and properties around the loch in the catchment area.  KEC’s business activities include fishing, shooting parties, agriculture and property development alongside a range of tourism interests including hotels and golf courses, all within the Loch Leven catchment area.  Loch Leven has been chosen by OpenNESS as one of its case studies (No 16).

Loch Leven is a eutrophic lake covering 13.3 km2 in Central Scotland. The lake is a world famous trout fishery, internationally recognised conservation area (SSSI, Ramsar, SAC, Natura 2000) as well as a  National Nature Reserve, a source of water supply to downstream industry and having an increasingly valuable role in tourism. Loch Leven has been an important site for scientific research for almost 200 years and, in recent decades, KEC has collaborated extensively with CEH, Marine Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage and other bodies to further research into the lake.

KEC’s involvement as an OpenNESS partner is a logical progression in seeking to further knowledge of how to balance conservation with other socio-economic factors.
