The University of Helsinki is the largest university in Finland. The Department of Environmental Sciences has 150 staff members. The main areas of research and teaching are (1) global change and environmental policy (including climate change), (2) aquatic sciences (e.g. research in the Baltic Sea, fisheries, freshwaters), (3) urban ecology and ecosystems, (4) biodiversity and conservation biology, and (5) environmental microbiology and bioremediation.
One of the strong fields of expertise at the Department is urban ecology and ecosystem research. The department has two professors in the field (urban ecology and urban ecosystems), and an international Masters’ Programme (Master’s Degree Programme in Multidisciplinary Studies on Urban Environmental Issues). The Department has strong international links and wide international collaboration both in research and teaching.
