Final OpenNESS Annual Meeting in Smolenice, Slovakia

The Environment Bank Ltd (EBL) is the leading trader in the UK in environmental assets (natural capital stocks), enabling and brokering deals between buyers (developers, corporate, investors) and sellers (landowners, farmers, conservation bodies, land management companies), thereby facilitating new markets to substantially increase investment in the natural environment. EBL’s current focus is on biodiversity offsetting through habitat banking. This is timely, both in the UK and more widely in Europe. Biodiversity offsets have recently been identified in the UK, by the high-profile business-led Ecosystem Markets Task Force, as one of the top business opportunities related to valuing and/or protecting nature. At EU level, the European Commission is currently developing policy for a ‘no net loss initiative’ scheduled for 2015, which is expected to promote biodiversity offsetting, including habitat banking, as one of its central measures.

In OpenNESS, EBL is contributing offsetting case studies in Essex and Warwickshire. EBL will also provide expertise relating to policy, regulation, mechanisms and instruments and business engagement, for Work Packages 2, 3, 6 and 7. Our involvement in OpenNESS is linked to our business interests in expanding trade in environmental assets in Europe, to increase funding and thereby achieve a step-change for nature conservation.
