Aarhus University (AU) is the second largest university in Denmark, ranking among the top 100 universities of the world. The departments Environmental Science and Bioscience, formerly the National Environment Research Institute (NERI), have expertise in terrestrial ecology, marine and freshwater ecology, atmospheric science, environmental chemistry and microbiology, emissions modelling, environmental geography and environmental policy analysis. Both departments conduct pure and applied environmental research and provide policy advice for ministries and other national and international parties.
The Environmental Social Science research unit, employing 20 staff, focuses on interdisciplinary analysis of the interlinkages between the environment and society involving the disciplines of economics, political science and sociology. The strategic focus of the unit includes bioeconomic modelling, the economics of ES and the understanding of actors in policy formulation and implementation.
